
GAZIANTEP CULTURAL ROAD PROJECT
Gaziantep Fortress and its surroundings have always been the center of social, cultural, education, and commercial life. It played an active role in every stage of the history. Over the time, it became way with the addition of other centers to the union.
This way is called “Cultural Road” with its Hans, hamams, and mosques. Gaziantep is still a historical center with its almost extinct local artifacts, coppersmithing, art of mother of pearl, silver embroidery, jewelry, making of kilims, making of earthenware pots, weaving of aba, making of Turkish clarion, making of packsaddles, etc.
This Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality’s Cultural Road Project, goes all the way from the surroundings of the Fortress of Gaziantep to Kecehane Caddesi (street), Uzun Carsi, Hamdi Kutlar Caddesi (street), Gumruk Caddesi (street) with Boyaci Cami (mosque), Alauddevle Sokak (alley), from Meyvaci Carsisi (bazaar) and Eski Saray Street to Bakircilar Carsisi (bazaar), Bugday Arasasi, Almaci Pazari, Sire Han, and to Yemis Han.
On this direction, there are a total of 40 historical sites including 18 Hans, 9 mosques, 4 hamams, 1 mevlevi lodge. There also some historical structures built by locals which are also patented.
With the “Culture Way” project besides the restoration of historical structures, there is going to be a frontal restoration done in the buildings within 5.5 kilometers of the surrounding areas. The construction of walkways, landscaping, and 3.5 kilometers long drive way is also planned within the project.
